Frederick City has a Mayor and currently a five-member Council. The Mayor holds executive power over the city and the five council members share legislative power over the entire city.

Frederick County has a County Executive and a seven-member Council. The County Executive holds executive power over the county, and the seven council members - five from specific districts and two representing the entire city - hold legislative power. Frederick County will be holding an election next year in 2026.
